Substrate Flatness for Porcelain Tile: Why Preparation Matters

Learn why a stable, clean and flat substrate is essential for 600×600 porcelain, how unevenness affects lippage and coverage, and what installers should verify.

The tile installation can only be as reliable as the surface supporting it

A flat-looking slab is not automatically ready for tile. The substrate must be structurally appropriate, sufficiently cured, clean, free from bond-breaking contaminants and flat enough for the tile format and installation system.

For 600×600 porcelain, preparation is especially important because larger tiles bridge more surface area and make local highs and lows harder to correct during setting.

Flatness tolerance comes from the applicable system

MAPEI large-format guidance provides strict flatness examples for the systems and standards it addresses, but the exact tolerance for your project should come from the applicable local standard and installation-material manufacturer.

Do not copy a number from another country or tile system without checking its scope.

Cleaning means more than sweeping

Bond breakers can include dust, curing compounds, wax, grease, paint, loose material and other contaminants. Surface preparation may require mechanical treatment rather than simply washing.

Follow the adhesive or levelling-product manufacturer’s requirements so the prepared surface is compatible with the bonding system.

Cracks need evaluation before covering

Some substrate cracks are stable shrinkage cracks; others indicate ongoing movement. CTEF guidance recommends using crack-isolation systems where appropriate, but the right method depends on the crack and assembly.

Structural movement should not be hidden under tile without professional evaluation.

Do not use tile adhesive as a general floor leveller

Setting mortar has a designed application thickness and open time. Attempting to correct large depressions while simultaneously setting tile can make coverage and level control unpredictable.

Where significant correction is required, use a compatible patching or levelling method designed for the substrate before tile installation.

How flat should a floor be before 600×600 tile?

Use the applicable installation standard and setting-material manufacturer’s tolerance for the tile format and system. Do not rely on a universal number.

Can adhesive fix an uneven substrate?

Only within the adhesive product’s permitted application. Major flatness correction should be completed with an appropriate preparation method.

Can tile be installed over cracks?

Cracks must be evaluated. Some conditions may use a compatible crack-isolation system, while structural movement requires a different response.

Why does substrate flatness affect lippage?

High and low areas force adjacent tiles to sit at different elevations, making edge differences harder to control.
